Gleecap: "Prom Queen"

[Actually written by Jennifer Neal: due to a Blogger glitch, I'm unable to change the owner of a blog post after I've edited it for some reason. Frustrating, I know... So... credit where it's due!]

The much anticipated "Prom Queen" episode of Glee was definitely worth the wait spoiler or no spoiler.

McKinley High's prom king and queen candidates were desperately trying to gain more votes while others were considering that winning will actually ruin their reputation early on in the episode.

We see that Puckerman is tired of feeling like he's "less than a badass" because he's dating Lauren and tries to get Artie to help him in the classic prom prank of spiking the punch which will be guarded by Coach Sylvester herself.

Artie is reluctant because he doesn't feel it will help impress Brittany, who he wants to make amends with and ask to prom.

Principal Figgins was back in this episode informing Will and a disgruntled Sue that New Directions will be providing the music and entertainment for prom because he couldn't get the band he wanted.

The familiar prom anticipatory feelings were felt by viewers everywhere as our favorite cast members agonized over having no dates, not being able to afford prom, which dress or suit is best and of course who really is going to be crowned king and queen?

Kurt and Blaine have thier own prom problems as Blaine reveals a tough part of his past in which he was bullied for being gay. Since Kurt wants nothing more than to attend prom with Blaine and show the school that he doesn't care what they think Blaine agrees.

Santana and Dave Karofsky, still keeping up the charade of their relationship to hide their true sexuality, volunteer to help Kurt and Blaine by keeping them secure during school hours and at prom. Santana's motive is to gain more votes but a tearful Karofsky truly apologizes to Kurt for the way he has treated him in the past and we see that his motives are deeper. We see a glimmer of hope in Dave's eyes that he one day could have the courage to come out and be who he truly is as Kurt has done.

"Prom Queen" also debuted the return of Jesse St. James much to everyone's dismay but Rachel. They're "Rolling in the Deep" version of the Adele song was stellar as usual when these two sing anything together. (I have to agree with Sue that "Run Joey Run" was AWFUL but can we deny the talent that this pair has?)

Rachel is a character I have love/hate relationship with and this episode definitely showed a lot of the reasons why. She shows huge redeeming qualities for a lot of her bad behavior in the past but I still can't decide if her motives are actually just selfishness or if she truly cares about the greater good of the Glee club.

She saw how upset Mercedes was about not having a date and suggested that she, her and Sam go together on a budget so that Sam will be able to attend and have a good time despite his family's financial situation. However, as soon as Jesse asks her what her prom plans are she changes them to include him in their outing.

So, even though Jesse has proven himself to be a total jerk in the past and did some pretty terrible things to Rachel and the entire Glee club she still welcomes him back with open arms. Now, does she really want him back? Or does she see how jealous Finn is over it and is just using him? It's one of those times where I can't tell whether to feel sorry for Rachel or if I'm just waiting for her to drop the bomb and reveal her own selfish motives? Or am I being too harsh and she really is just a teenage girl confused and in love?

Jumping back over to Artie's situation, Puck, Finn and Sam help him perform a "prom proposal" song to Brittany in order to win back her heart. An acoustic guitar performance of "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder is heard accompanied by cooking utensil percussion during Home Ec class. His efforts prove futile however, as Brittany rejects his offer stating that she is still upset over him calling her stupid. She'd rather go alone and "dance with everyone else's dates." (My favorite Brittany moment of the night!)

The big night is drawing closer and when Kurt debuts his "royal wedding inspired" ensemble, both Blaine and his dad, Burt, have concerns over whether or not Kurt and Blaine will run into any trouble on prom night over people's unaccepting behavior. Blaine sides with Burt and a hurt Kurt reveals that he doesn't care and is going however he wants and that Blaine can come with or not.

Now let's talk about Quinn for a little bit, another character I have a love/hate relationship with. She's another one who I feel only cares about herself. Her stunning aqua blue prom dress was absolutely gorgeous and since Rachel helped Finn pick out just the right corsage for her she looked like she was destined to become prom queen from birth. She walks and smiles like she already has the title and we think Finn is serious when he tells her how beautiful she is. (Which confuses us because can't he see that he loves Rachel!?) And also, does Quinn really love Finn or does she just feel that with him on her arm her chances for the crown will increase?

Finn and Quinn run into Sam, Mercedes, Rachel and Jesse out at Breadstix and Finn and Jesse had some heated moments much to the surprise (and happiness?) of Rachel and to the horror of Quinn. Quinn is starting to realize that maybe Finn's feelings for Rachel are more than friendly.

Prom begins and what I feel was one of the best performances of the season starts. Artie, Puck and Sam singing Rebecca Black's epic viral fail "Friday" and actually making us enjoy it. It was a thousand times better than the original and there didn't need to be any autotuning and we could tell our boys were having fun with it.
The shots of the rest of our Glee club dancing were less than priceless.

Blaine's "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" being backed up by Brittany and Tina got stuck in all of our heads and I'm sure The Black Kids had a spike in downloads.

Rachel's "Jar of Hearts" (who I felt would be directed towards Jesse) was totally sung while staring at Finn and Quinn slow dancing and there was no doubt the feeling in Finn as he looked back at her.

During this song, Sam also approached a stag Mercedes, told her how beautiful she was and asked her to dance. The smile on Mercedes' face was picture worthy as her dream of "being Cinderella for just one night" starts coming true.

Since Artie's plan to get Brittany back failed he agrees to help Puck spike the punch. He gets caught and is taken into Sue's office where she attempts an interrogation and eludes that it will lead to torture and the possible removal of some of Artie's teeth.

Meanwhile, back at the prom Finn notices Rachel and Jesse getting quite cozy on the dance floor and storms over in a jealous (and unjustified?) rage. The two begin fighting and Sue's right hand, Becky, runs and tells her to go break it up. Jesse and Finn are thrown out of prom and Quinn cries as she realizes that she may not have a prom king now.

Artie also admits to Sue that he only put lemonade in the punch disguised in an alcohol bottle so Brittany would think he was cool. Sue lets him go since her plan of trying to get him to rat out Puck so she can expel him and make New Directions one less short for Nationals has failed.

The announcements for the winners are about to be announced and the gym grows silent as Principal Figgins makes the announcements.

Prom King is announced to be Dave Karofsky. (And Santana makes sure to throw a "haha" at Quinn because she feels she's the queen now by default.)

Prom Queen is announced to be Kurt Hummel.

Those who knew about the spoiler scandal may still have been surprised by the reaction. This wasn't the school accepting Kurt for who he is and giving him an awesome honor. This was the school showing how unaccepting they are of him and pulling a practical joke. ("Queen" being a slanderous term.)

Kurt runs out into the hallway being followed by Blaine, Quinn to the bathroom being followed by Rachel and Santana to some other room in the school being followed by Brittany.

The hallway: Kurt feels that he's foolish for believing that he and Blaine would get through the night with no complications despite the protection of Dave and Santana. Blaine just listens and allows Kurt to come to conclusions on his own.

The bathroom: Quinn is totally Black Swan-ing on Rachel and blaming her for everything that's happened between her and Finn and for being the reason why she didn't get elected prom queen. (Also unjustified?) In the "slap heard 'round the gym bathroom", she assualts Rachel and then admits to being jealous of her. Rachel, who does seem to have these very fine moments of dignity sometimes, just dries Quinn's tears and tries to tell her how pretty she is and that it really isn't true that she was the reason for any of this. The girls decide to go back out to prom

Elsewhere in the school: Santana is upset because she thinks the school didn't vote for her because they must have found out that she is a lesbian. Brittany tells her that maybe they didn't vote for her because she's not being true to who she is. She also convinces Santana to return to prom because Kurt was going to need her now.

Back in the hallway: Blaine asks Kurt what he is going to do. Kurt decides to return to prom and accept his crown stating that they have to show the school that "they can't touch me, touch us, or what we have". A smiling and proud Blaine escorts him back to the gym.

Kurt's crowning moment was classic as he announced "Eat your heart out Kate Middleton" as the gym erupted in a slow but generous applause. Since the prom king and queen dance is a time honored tradition, Kurt and Karofsky make their way to the dance floor.

Kurt tells Dave that it's his chance to come out and show them that he doesn't care what people think about him but Dave utters "I can't" and runs off crying.
"Excuse me, may I have this dance?" is heard and we see that Blaine is offering his hand to Kurt.

Kurt accepts it and then Mercedes and Santana sing the show's closing number, ABBA's "Dancing Queen", and clips of the rest of the cast dancing and being happy despite everything that has happened take us home.

So, what's next for New Directions?

Nationals is coming up in New York, Jesse St. James ("Jesse St. Sucks" haha) is hired on to help the gang prepare for Nationals, Sue is still trying to sabotage them, and Quinn wants her and Finn to quit Glee club? What?!

**** SPOILERS AND RUMORS ****

As most of us Gleeks know, next week's episode is called "Funeral" and rumors are FLYING.

Are the producers killing someone off? Does this mean the death of a relationship?
Rumors are saying both.

Burt has been cleared and will live but rumors are still floating around that either Terri, Artie, Coach Biest, Jesse or (god forbid!) Blaine may kick the bucket.
In interviews, Darren Criss (Blaine Anderson) always possesses interest in sticking with Glee but is always elusive and is "never sure" what the producers have in store for him or whether or not he'll be in Season 3.

And as for the death of a relationship?

My bets are on Finn and Quinn.

There's no way he's going to give up Glee club for her.

Not when he can be with Rachel and still sing his football playing heart out, right? ;)

"Funeral" song list-

Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory- TBA
My Man from Funny Girl - Rachel
Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding - TBA
Some People from Gypsy - Kurt
Back to Black by Amy Winehouse - TBA

Also there is an unannounced "crazy mash-up" that is going to be featured in the episode.
